Last night was the biggest night for American theater as the Tony Awards took center stage. What a breathtaking night. Neil Patrick Harris — star of stage and screen — hosted the star-studded evening, which featured appearances by Sigourney Weaver, Matthew Broderick, Jake Gyllenhaal and Cyndi Lauper. The latter even took home an award for Outstanding Score for the musical Kinky Boots.
Performances from the nominated musicals were eye-popping, especially the circus act-inspired Pippin and the tap dancing kids of A Christmas Story, which will return to the Great White Way in December. And Kinky Boots, which took home the Tony for Best Musical, also looks like a lot of fun. Inspired by the film of the same name, the musical follows a struggling boot factory as it begins making boots for drag queens and saves itself from closure. With music by Cyndi Lauper, it also sounds amazing.
And if you’re a fan of the 80s, you’ll never forget Ms. Lauper’s riveting performance (video below) of her hit song True Colors as theater greats who passed away in the previous year were remembered. Absolutely stunning.
Congrats to the great Cicely Tyson on her Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her turn in The Trip to Bountiful, the same role that won Geraldine Page an Oscar in 1985. What a great win for her.
And back to Neil Patrick Harris. He was funny, charming, delightful. And the finale with Audra McDonald was fantastic. Obviously hosting an awards show for the fourth time is the charm.
