The Emmys doled out awards a week ago, and Modern Family once again took home the top comedy prize for Outstanding Comedy Series. The new television season has just kicked off, and I’ve watched the first couple of episodes of Brooklyn Nine Nine, a comedy show set in a Brooklyn police station. The series, starring Andy Samberg–who would never be mistaken for a cop- and Andre Braugher-who has wowed audiences before as a police officer-, is off to a great start. It’s not perfect, but has immense potential to hit its stride. And did I mention that Patton Oswalt will guest star on the show?
In Brooklyn Nine Nine, Samberg plays a goofy, out-of-bounds detective, and Braugher is his hard-nosed, gay supervisor. They clash from day one. After years of watching Braugher in serious dramas, it’s nice to see him play the heavy in a comedy. And, the supporting cast — particularly Joe Lo Truglio as insecure detective Charles Boyle and Chelsea Peretti as wacky assistant Gina Linetti – shines. Episode 2 features a hilarious bit about a psychic who helps solve a case or does she? In those scenes, Peretti reminds me of Desi Lydic, the wild star of MTV’s Awkward.
Tune into Brooklyn Nine Nine, one of the top reviewed and rated shows in this new season.
