Hope you are enjoying this glorious day and celebrating with friends, family or a good movie. Ted Greenberg’s The Complete Performer wishes you the happiest of Thanksgivings! And a very Happy Chanukah too. This rare convergence of the American feast with the Jewish celebration of the festival of lights is something to behold. It hasn’t happened in our lifetimes and it won’t happen again.

Sometimes you want to dine out on Thanksgiving. Perhaps you don’t want to cook. Or you hate doing the dishes. Or you hate turkey or your relatives. For whatever reason, you have plenty of options in New York City to enjoy a post-Macy’s Day Parade dinner. Here are some of my recommendations.

thanksgiv-day

(5) Vatan — Nothing says Thanksgiving quite like Indian food. This Murray Hill institution offers delicious vegetarian and vegan fare–dinner only–in its trippy designed dining room. The prix fixe dinner is delicious and filling. Believe me you will be as stuffed as that turkey your grandma is making on the big day.

(4) Ginny’s Supper Club — Who isn’t in love with this uptown hotspot. The Southern-inspired cuisine, the nightly entertainment and its cool vibe are a perfect equation for a fun night out. And, it’s open on Thanksgiving. Book your reservation now.

(3) Hill Country Barbecue Market — Get a taste of Texas on Turkey Day. Enjoy your bird bbq-styled or go for the bourbon sweet potato mash.

(2) The Cinnamon Snail — Don’t let the name fool ya. This is one of the best vegan food trucks in the nation. Multiple Vendy Awards and long lines prove just how beloved it is. You can order your meatless meal from them and pick it up on Thanksgiving Day. Go to its Facebook page for more details.

(1) The NoMad — Break the bank at this standout restaurant. You know you’ve wanted an excuse to visit it and blow all your money in one place. No better day than Turkey Day.

All in a Comedy Day’s Work

Today, Mascot Greenberg and I are holding a photo shoot for our holiday E-mail. We’re excited to create something celebratory and funny for our fans. I threw out a few ideas, and we settled on one that we cannot wait to show you. Expect to see it post-Thanksgiving, which is only a week away.

When I started performing Ted Greenberg’s The Complete Performer over five years ago, I wanted to create a dynamic comedy show that could stand the test of time. I’m proud that we’re still going strong and celebrating our 6th Smash Season. At the time, though, I didn’t imagine that so much of the job is what you do off stage too. The 60 minutes I’m on the Huron Club stage every Saturday are pure bliss. But as a yoga instructor once told me, “yoga is what you do between classes.” Preparation is key.

A performer must look after his voice and body. I gotta train. The Mascot too. Body that is. Not voice. I stay in touch with my fans through Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and sometimes just E-mail. I plan photo shoots and E-mail blasts. I see other shows for inspiration. It’s all in a day’s work. Or a week’s work. And I’m proud of all of this. It’s joyful.

Now, when I see someone else’s show, I realize that what I see on stage is much greater than a performer speaking lines. It’s a full team creating a show, marketing the show, keeping it real with fans and so much, much more.

I cannot wait for you to see what Mascot and I have in store for you.

Who Is the Funniest, Sexiest Man Alive

People Magazine is slated to announce its Sexiest Man Alive this week. Rumors have been swirling that Adam Levine– the model-loving Voice judge and Maroon 5 frontman – will take home the honors. He would certainly fit in the magazine’s previous winners- hot, pretty men.

But, when you ask women what they want in a man, the first thing they say is they want someone funny. Scroll the list of previous winners- Mel Gibson, Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt (twice), Johnny Depp (twice), Sean Connery- and you don’t see anyone funny on the list. Two-time winner George Clooney is known as a prankster, but not as a comedian.

Where’s the love People Mag? Why not show some love to Louis C.K.? He’s got a hot award-winning TV show. Or what about Nick Offerman, who is genuinely charming on Parks and Rec? Or there’s everybody’s fave-Patton Oswalt? Women love him. Perhaps Stephen Colbert or Jon Stewart would be better choices as they host hit comedy shows? Kevin Hart and Aziz Ansari have been on fire this year. Comedy specials and you cannot read an article without hearing their names. I think it’s time what women really want-a funny man-was reflected in the choice.

Sure perfect abs are winning. A killer smile too. A big box office film as well. But none of those things will keep you in good spirits like a funny man. Take a chance People!

Perfect Pair: Susie Essman & Mario Cantone

Next week, Stage 72 is hosting an evening with Susie Essman and Mario Cantone. It will be an over-the-top laugh riot. Most people know Essman from her foul-mouthed turn on Curb Your Enthusiasm; in fact, people often come up to her and ask her to swear at them the way she does on the show. Cantone, despite an illustrious theater career, is best known to audiences as Charlotte’s best friend on Sex and the City.

Essman is a quite funny comic and actress. I remember seeing her in the Vagina Monologues in 2000. She starred for a couple of weeks opposite Robin Givens and Donna Hanover. Susie had the audience in the palm of her hand from the minute the curtain went up. She was hilarious and heartbreaking.

Likewise, Cantone has wowed Broadway audiences and is a hit with the popular series Celebrity Autobiography where celebrities read from other celebrities’ autobiographies. The narcissism and navel gazing provide big laughs.

November 20th, check out Susie Essman and Mario Cantone together.

Welcome to the Neighborhood, Essen!

Sometimes you don’t know what you’re missing. Until it appears. Two weeks ago, ‘Essen a modern market/delicatessen- opened on the corner of Varick Street and Vandam Street in downtown Manhattan. The 24-hour market sports a juice bar, salad bar, snacks and lots of other food choices. Plus, you can sit down upstairs and enjoy your food.

Nothing like this exists downtown. And, given the local offices, the place is hopping during the daytime. 9-to-5ers need a decent lunch spot, especially one where they can pick up their food and go back to the office. And given the entertainment venues-Soho Playhouse, City Winery- and the clubs-Greenhouse, WIP-‘Essen is busy late at night too. After a night of revelry, a cup of coffee or some nosh is the perfect thing.

If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by ‘Essen. We want to keep them in business for a long time.

‘Just 10 Minutes’ Is All You Need

Writing comedy is hard. Hell writing anything worth seeing or hearing or whatever is hard. I should know. I won an Emmy for doing it. Which is why I started hanging out with the group Just Ten Minutes. They meet every Sunday at the Players Theater (115 MacDougal Street in New York City) at 8pm.

Putting words on paper is the easiest part of the process. But unless you have multiple personalities, or a multitude of imaginary friends, it’s hard to know what really works and what doesn’t That’s where J10M comes in. Bring in ten minutes or less of material and then cast it with whomever shows up. That’s it. It’s playwrights helping playwrights, but it’s more than that. Actors show up too. Apparently the opportunity to work on cold reading skills is something that some actors are willing to work on. And the best part, if it’s bad, it’s only 10 minutes worth, so it’s over pretty quickly. Because you can sit through anything for ten minutes; that’s like just double the average break anymore.

But really you couldn’t ask for a safer, supportive, nurturing environment. No one gives notes. You can speak to people after if you want feedback, but that is completely up to you. At the end of the day, it’s about the work. Sometimes all playwrights, screenwriters, poets, essayists want to hear their words. Their words, coming out of someone else’s mouth or their own, in front of a small supportive audience of colleagues and dare I say even friends. J10M puts a different kind of spin on Community Theater.

Time to Get “Behind The Mask”

Facebook being the new watercooler, I can tell my friends are jazzed by Netflix and its hit series — House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black. Love ’em both, and I am excited to watch what’s next on those groundbreaking series. I, though, may be even more excited by a new series on Hulu – Behind the Mask. Have you seen it yet? Check out the trailer: http://www.hulu.com/watch/543480.

It is essential viewing for anyone who loves Mascots or has one of his own, like me. Going ‘behind the mask’ is thrilling and demonstrates just how crazy, insane, off their gourd these men are. Of course, I think Mascot Greenberg still has his marbles in tack, but give it a few more years…and who knows?

I’m not the only one raving about this new docuseries. Both Entertainment Weekly and Daily Beast advise you to watch. Stay ahead of the game and tune in.

And when you’re ready to see a live mascot in action, check out my show Saturday nights at 10:00 pm at the Soho Playhouse in beautiful downtown Manhattan.
