People flock to Times Square every New Year’s Eve to celebrate. The event is televised, and watched by millions more. But, there are other places to ring in 2014 than Times Square.

Brooklyn has a number of unique ways to greet the new year. And while these events are well attended, they won’t have you packed in like sardines a la Times Square.

You can check out the fireworks in Prospect Park. There will be bands playing and warm refreshments. And this year, there’s a special ceremony where outgoing Borough President Marty Markowitz will hand the reins over to Borough President elect Eric Adams. The fun starts at 11pm, and for best viewing, head to Grand Army Plaza.

Or head over to Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill, one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the borough. Prestigious Pratt Institute will let you blow off some steam. Literally. The annual Steam Whistle welcome to the new year is a delight to the senses–particularly site and sound. Check out Gothamist’s coverage of last year’s event.

Wherever you celebrate, I wish you a happy and healthy 2014!
