A friend recently posted on Twitter that a smart film executive would get a script for a Kevin Hart-Melissa McCarthy comedy stat. It’s a brilliant idea. Those two have struck box office gold in America, and seem to be beloved by the public. I’ve raved about Ms. McCarthy before. Now, it’s time to give Mr. Hart his due.
I should first confess that my girlfriend LOVES him. Everything — his comedy albums, his films, his stunning grin and even his short stature. When Ride Along, Hart’s film with Ice Cube, broke the normal January doldrums at the box office, people in the industry and audiences alike took notice. And, it’s just been announced that a sequel is in the works. If your film passes the $100 million mark on a $25 million budget, you can expect that another film will be ordered.
His great work isn’t just confined to Ride Along. He stood tall (pun intended) opposite heavyweights Robert De Niro, Alan Arkin and Sylvester Stallone in Grudge Match. He stole every scene he was in–whether it was leaving his crappy car in the middle of the street when he learned he had gotten a financial sum or verbally sparring with Alan Arkin. If you watch the film, just forward to his scenes.
And, the more I think about it, I love the idea of Kevin Hart-Melissa McCarthy comedy. I’d pay $14 to see that.
