If you live in the West Village, you know there are a couple events each year that take over the streets and offer a visual and sonic display. And the Pride parade is one of them. This Sunday, tens of thousands of people will wind their way through downtown New York festooned in gorgeous, wild costumes and perched on creative floats with dance music blaring. All on Sunday morning. What a fun treat for the neighborhood and the nearly as many who line the streets watching the festivities. A celebration for the LGBTQ community and all New Yorkers.
The parade started a year after the historic Stonewall Riots after gay men fought police early in the morning in 1969. At that time gay bars were constantly raided by police in efforts of intimidation, but on June 28th, the Stonewall patrons had had enough. Now 45 years later, the Pride Parade is still going strong.
