Funny Ladies are the Biggest Story at the Emmys

When the Emmys were handed out this week, the biggest stories surrounded two funny women. And for very different reasons. The headlines were all about Girls creator Lena Dunham and comedian Sarah Silverman.

On the red carpet, Silverman let Giuliana Rancic look inside her clutch. When asked about a certain device found inside, Silverman revealed that it is her liquid pot vaporizer. And the world went nuts. In fact, I don’t think many remember that she took home an Emmy, just that she carried a pot pen. You can catch the video here.

The other huge story was Dunham’s new look. Her blonde Oliver Cromwell haircut and her voluminous dress, which landed her on nearly every worst dress list out there. Outside of Tilda Swinton and Bjork, that generally does not happen. I love that she can turn the conversation about herself no matter what she does. And that she takes risks in her fashion, just like on her show.

Thank you ladies for keeping it interesting.

Tennis Takes Over New York

Today, the US Open makes Queens the place to be. The best tennis players in the world will vie for top prize at the final Grand Slam of the year, and this sport will have New York under its spell for two glorious weeks.

Arthur Ashe Stadium is huge, and unless you have corporate tickets, the worst place to watch two pros hit a tennis ball. But the rest of the courts offer a chance to sit mere feet from the top pros. While Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova haven’t set foot on those courts in years, you may catch the new Genie Bouchard, the Canadian player who has sets hearts afire with her play and beauty. Or see Nick Krygios, an up-and-coming American player.

Either way, there are millions of reasons to head out to the tournament during the fortnight. Besides the great players on court, there are plenty of celebrities who will be there taking in the action. There’s live music and activities for kids too.

Maybe I’ll see you out there. Bring your sunscreen

Netflix has become a gamechanger in the entertainment world. The company, once solely known for shipping DVDs of films and TV shows, is now a top content provider with shows like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black — two of the most talked about and beloved on any platform today.

Last week Netflix threw its hat in the comedy special arena — something you think about HBO and other cable channels. According to this Denver Post article, Netflix will present five comedy specials from Bill Cosby, Chelsea Handler, Chelsea Peretti, Jim Jefferies and Bill Burr. From August 29th through December 5th, the company will roll out the five comedy specials — all taped this year.

I’m a fan of Ms. Peretti’s, and look forward to her special the most. But, I love how Netflix gives us another reason to subscribe.

August Is My Favorite Time of Year

Six years ago, I had the great fortune to be part of the New York International Fringe Festival. Those performances launched my long-running comedy show Ted Greenberg’s The Complete Performer. After a sold out run in the festival, the show moved to Soho Playhouse, and we will celebrate our 6th Anniversary this fall with 6 weeks of 6pm shows.

Every August, I peruse the FringeNYC guide to find shows that I want to see — solo shows, comedies, an odd musical or two, and even some dramas. If you’re like me, you need some help choosing which of the 200 shows to go to. I also read what the New York Times and other outlets are previewing. Here’s the Times roundup. TheaterMania.com also had a list of 7 shows to see. And Time Out New York breaks down the myriad styles of shows.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to the lovely Christine Renee Miller, who is directing the solo show Mother at this year’s FringeNYC.

I look forward to seeing you downtown at the shows over the next two weeks.

For those of you who like to be in bed by 10pm, I’m running 6pm Ted Greenberg’s The Complete Performer shows starting October 25th. You’ll be out of the theater by 7pm and – if you win the free cab ride – home by 7:15pm, in time to settle in with a giant kale smoothie and apply a mud mask before 10pm – giving you a full night’s sleep ahead of your 6am spinning class. This health nut offer runs only 6 Saturdays and coincides with our 6th anniversary.

6pm show time, 6th anniversary special, 6 weeks, and on October 25th a drink voucher for any 6 dollar drink!!!!!

For nearly 6 years many of you have clamored for an earlier showtime. “I can’t stay out that late!” “I’m NOT a vampire!” “I am a vampire, but I see theater before sundown!” My mascot and I have heard you loud and clear. Take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and book your $20 tickets now.

What won’t change is the high wire comedy you’ve grown to love and a free post-show cab ride to anywhere in New York City for one lucky audience group per show, driven by me.

See you soon!

— Ted

P.S. For those nite owls, our show normally runs at 10pm. You can get tickets to those shows here.

72 Million Smackeroos

The biggest news in comedy this week is that the internationally popular show The Big Bang Theory will return for three more seasons, and signed its three leads — Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki — to the tune of $1 million per episode. That means $24 million per season times three which equals $72 million smackeroos. Plus, according to some reports, they get some back end money, pushing the contract to close to $100 million. Not bad for a show about geeks and nerds and the beautiful and nerdy women who love them.

Since Revenge of the Nerds thirty years ago, geeks and geek culture has exploded. Comic books have been elevated to high art, and the biggest films are about superheroes. And, now the biggest comedy on the planet revolves around two physicists. In other words, brains are sexy. And funny. And rich.

With all the troubling news in the world, we need some levity. A chance to laugh. Blow off steam. Forget about the world’s troubles and our own. Even if it’s just for a couple of minutes.

Here are the articles I’m reading about comedy. Al Lubel has a comedy show opening in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and he recounts how nervous he was the first time he appeared on the David Letterman show in this piece for the Guardian. It makes perfect sense to be worried about your big national TV debut. And, he turned that fear into a comedy bit. The best solution — cannibalize your life for your comedy.

NY1 profiled HA! The Musical yesterday. The great American artform — the musical — now tackles the ins and outs of stand up comedy and even features real stand up comedians. I’m interested to see how this turns out.

And in Bollywood comedy news Kapil Sharma is looking to make more films and turn his Comedy Nights with Kapil, his extremely popular TV show, into a weekly series. This is big news for millions of his fans.

Happy Reading!
